Come spend the day and explore eight smashing projects that are possible using my new Creative Grid Rulers.

Curves For Squares, Curves For Rectangles, Straight Out of Line, and the Curved Slotted Ruler.  Whether your working from your cherished stash or adventuring fresh into Batiks, Stripes, Dots, Jungle and more you will have a blast with some of the most amazingly fast and fun blocks ever, that will allow you to change your mind, your color or your print when ever you want to.  These designs offer flexibility from four to ten inch squares to rectangles.  Most importantly you will gain an awesome eye for color - pattern - motion - range - selection, with a tad of surprise and a few broken rules thrown in.  You will come away with a new freedom as a quilter and be amazed that anything so beautiful can be so fun!

I will guide you though the cutting process teaching you a free form method as well as how to use of the rulers. While the rulers are optional they will provide you with a perfect cut every time.

Karla provides you the opportunity to pick the pattern which you would like to do for the class. Click on the links below to view and download the Supply Sheet for this class.

Lone Star Sparkler

Helen Young Frost

   1 Day

Quilters love the Lone Star! Make your own diamond dazzler with this great method of strip-piecing developed by Helen and her mother, Blanche Young. Learn precision pinning and sewing, painless set-in seams, and perfect mitered borders as shown in their new book, All-Star Quilts: 10 Strip-Pieced Lone Star Sparklers (C&T Publishing, 2010).

Lone Star Sparkler (28" x 28")

Look for three fabrics that range from lighter to darker or from color to color. Buying the same amount of each star fabric allows you to rearrange the order in class. The background fabric can be lighter or darker, as in the project shown, as long as it contrasts with the star fabrics. The borders can be fabrics used in the star or different fabrics.

Fabrics
3/8 yard each of 3 fabrics for the star points
1/2 yard for background
1/8 yard for accent border
2/3 yard for outer border
3/8 yard for binding*
1 yard for backing*
*Not needed in class.

Mat (12" x 18" or larger)
Sewing machine with wound bobbins

This class targets improving your free-motion skills in the spirit of adventure!

This intensive study in free-motion embellishing will start with a short review of the basics, just to refresh your memory, and then we will ‘branch out’ in several different directions, taking embellishments to the third dimension.   We will create embellishments and designs that really ‘stand out’!  I’ll bring samples of a few items, (some incredibly realistic three-dimensional plants and flowers) and I’ll demonstrate everything for you, then we’ll spend the rest of the day just playing!   Interaction between students is very much encouraged as we try out new ideas in class.

Don’t worry if your free-motion skills aren’t what you wish they were – Trust me, this class will really help you improve all of your free-motion skills, from embellishing to quilting.  If you have a BASIC understanding of free-motion stitching (i.e. quilting, embellishing, free-motion embroidery or just darning your jeans) you are ready for this class!

Motto for the day:  “Don’t worry ‘bout nuthin’!”

Supply List:
Student Supply List – 3-D Thread Drawing Class

Please bring the following items to class:

Your sewing machine, with all accessories – don’t forget your foot pedal,
cord, and instruction manual!
Darning/free motion foot to fit your machine (or after market ‘Big Foot’ will work fine)
Bring your ‘portable sewing table’ or sewing bed extension if you have one
Basic sewing supplies
3 or 4 extra bobbins (empty)
** Rayon, cotton, and/or metallic threads in a variety of colors – variegated is great!
** Embroidery needles (if you have them) – size 75 and/or 90
** 1 small package lightweight or medium weight water soluble stabilizer (e.g., Sulky     Solvy)
** Machine embroidery hoop (7” spring hoop works great)

NO fabric is required for this class, but if you wish, you may bring 3 or 4 fat quarters or scraps of a variety of fabrics – earthy textures or anything you love!  (In case you want to stitch your thread drawing onto a background in class.)

Note:  IF YOU HAVE THEM, (please don’t purchase them special for this class) you might also consider bringing heavy weight water soluble stabilizers, as well as the ‘iron away’ (brush off) stabilizers (like Heat Away).  You might also want to bring fibers, stuff you love, or other fun embellishments you have in your stash.  Just about anything goes in this class, so if you think you might be able to use it, feel free to bring it!

** = I will have these items available for purchase in class.
